The Anytowne U.S.A. series, which started in 2006, uses small American towns as a backdrop for my exploration into our pop culture and iconography that surrounds our daily lives. The works blend materials that are traditional and non-traditional as well as archival and non-archival. This approach to making work reflects my thoughts about our society.

The overall theme is a look at the specific and mundane aspects of our daily life. The nonsensical juxtaposed with the rational creates an ambiguous image that is representational to our American culture. The physicality of materials and assemblage play an important role in the reading of the image. The masking tape represents the layman’s “get’r fixed” quick fix that will not last, while in contrast, the archival blue glue can be interpreted as craft and design that should last for a least a century. Both the tape and glue are used to attach cheap tracing paper to expensive printing paper and I see this contrast as a reflection to our “built to last” and “throwaway” culture. Titles for the works are from lyrics and common conversations that share an exactness to a moment or place. The images of flowers and traffic intersections portray the conflict of urban and rural, masculine and feminine, and the organic and manmade. These types of decisions appear throughout the entire work and move between both annotative and highly rendered style.
